Academic English
Academic English classes focus on building the language skills which students need in university and professional life. A grammar-based approach ensures that students can communicate effectively through both writing and speaking. Just as importantly, high level listening skills are developed through the use of lectures, conversations, and interviews.
English Express attributes the ongoing success of our students to our small class sizes: Seven students is the maximum size of any class and the typical class size is four to five students.
English Express offers all levels of Academic English. We teach the following skills.

- Pronunciation: modeling, repetition, physiology of sound formation
- Test taking skills: multiple choice & essay tests

Advanced English:
Weekday Noon Class
Grammar 3A: 4.5 hours of class per week
Days: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday Level: Advanced
Time: 12:00 pm to 1:30 pm
Cost: $300 every four weeks
Textbook, wkbk, CD: $85 plus tax Class Length: 15weeks
Academic grammar class which covers all the verb tenses, nouns, pronouns, article usage, and modal auxiliaries. In addition, complex sentence structure is taught thru the use of dependent clauses. The grammar is taught thru listening, speaking, and writing exercises

Reading, Writing & Grammar 3A: 4 hours per week
Level: Advanced
Day & Time: Wednesdays from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm & Fridays: 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm
Class Cost: Pay month by month: $270 every four weeks
Three textbooks for this class: A short story book, a grammar textbook, and an essay writing textbook: Each book is $85 plus tax
This class focuses an academic writing. The class begins with paragraphs construction and moves onto to essays. The following organizational techniques are taught in class: descriptions, cause/effect, opinions, and argumentative essays. Writing is taught by examining sample paragraphs and essays, doing controlled writing exercises, reviewing grammar, introducing new vocabulary, and more. Also, original short stories by renowned American, British, and Australian authors are read and discussed in class. Grammar is also addressed in class by analysis of the short stories and thru student writing. The grammar errors that occur in students’ essays are taught and practiced in class.

This class uses videos of people interacting at the university, workplace, stores, and hotels to teach useful conversational skills for life in an American city. Vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation elements are included in the conversations. Functional writing which focuses on career and work-related themes is included. Additionally, there is a website for students to practice skills at home.

Intermediate Academic Grammar 2 hours of class per week
Level: Intermediate

Textbooks & audio: $85 (The books will be used for several months)
Verb tenses, modals, and the fundamentals of compound and complex sentence construction are taught. Students speak, listen, and write during class in a variety of interactive exercises and activities. This class provides a solid core of essential academic grammar for the student who wishes to enter university or the professional workforce.
Listening & Speaking 2A: 2 hours per week
Intermediate Level
Day & Time: Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm
Class Cost: Pay month by month: $160 every four weeks Textbooks & audio: $85
This class presents interviews taken from various news programs of TV and radio. They cover a wide variety of aspects of American culture, including our information society, the aging workforce, animal intelligence, education and more. These interviews are used as springboards for conversation. Students incorporate the vocabulary, idioms, and expressions into their conversation by discussing the themes of the interview. Necessary grammar and pronunciation are included.

This class establishes the foundation for sentence construction. Verb tenses, nouns and pronouns, and expressions of quantity are covered. Students engage in functional communication, which includes controlled speaking, listening, and writing. Students are tested at the end of each chapter; a midterm and final grade report are issued

Class Length: 18 weeks
This class teaches vocabulary, phonics, and grammar thru life-skill conversations. In addition reading and writing are taught and practiced. Some of the topics that are conversations about buying things, a person's likes and dislikes, renting an apartment, talking about schedules, school, and clothes.
